They know that these are not simply old tires, but treasures ready to give new life by creating employment and community. Yet people are sought after even more. Detroit has a poverty rate nearly three times higher than the national average—roughly 35%--the child poverty rate is even higher, at more than 50%. Meanwhile, community members and organizations are working together to build creative strategies to address these issues and the ones that come along with them—things like housing insecurity, healthcare disparities, and low wages.
Students will take the 5-hour road trip to Detroit during the first weekend of service break to serve with Cass Community Social Services. Cass Community Social Services is locally-focused agency dedicated to providing:
